Meet my ladybug shirt. This is one of the few
clothing items that makes me feel good, without having to conform to society’s
norms of the beautiful sexy woman. Don’t get me wrong, I like wearing pretty
dresses and high heels, but there is something special about wearing a button
down shirt, smart shoes and plain black pants and stil being able to rock your
strut.

Normcore Uniforms | Identity Crisis Averted
According to some very fancy
psychologists, millennials are going through an identity crisis as a result of
our quickly changing world without the stereotypical role models. Are normcore,
trends and the concept of millennials giving us our sense of belonging back?

'She is wearing a hat!' | The Charlie Bowler
A hat. What do you think? Is it
supercilious or is it just another way to make your outfit more interesting? I often
feel like you can’t just wear a hat because you feel like wearing a hat. A hat
is loud. It screams ‘I am wearing a hat!’ It all seems very obvious and in your
face. Not very Jana to be honest. But, I bought this hat for a reason and it’s
not going to fulfill its life purpose by collecting dust in my wardrobe. So,
throw me a cane and get out of my way, because I’m Charlie Chaplining throughout
my day!

The Perfect Pair of Jeans | A Long Legs Victory
The search for a new pair of jeans is never an easy one.
Combine that with long legs, wide hips and a tiny waist and it because pretty
much impossible. Luckily after many shopping trips – poor me :p – I found two
pairs that fit me like a glove. These are my perfect pairs of jeans and how I found
them.

Defining Yourself and Your Blog - A Not So Frivolous Affair
![]() |
| Marie Claire Belgium - March 2016 |
As a blogger, it can be difficult to determine what your blog is going to be. You might chose a niche to work in, like Beauty and Lifestyle. But after a while of doing the textbook thing, you want to start putting more of yourself in what you do. It might be nice for people to know whether you like a product or not, but what keeps your readers coming back is personality and a different take on the usual stuff. This is how I combine my interests into original content.

How To Christmas
It’s less than a week until Christmas and my Christmas obsessed brain is freaking out whether or not I have done everything possible to enjoy this festive period to the fullest. So like the Christmas freak I am, I made a list of all the things I find vital for experiencing all the Christmassy goodness.

Coffee, Intestines and the Wheelchair of Doom
Today I was
wandering around town, getting some fall/winter essentials I had run out of,...
when I decided to stop by one of my old favorite coffee places. It is currently
freezing in Belgium at the moment. And, don’t get me wrong, I love this kind of
weather. But now and then you just have to escape it and warm up with a nice
cup of basic bitch all-carameled-and-whipped-creamed-out coffee. So, I decided
to revisit this old goldie where I used to pass my time during high school. (By

The Great Puzzle #8: The Mean Reds
We all have
that place we turn to when everything, “life”, gets a little bit too much. I
had a few of those. In Antwerp I had the coffee shop on the corner of my street
and a used bookstore called De Slegte. De Slegte is actually a bookstore chain
and they have one of those in Hasselt, but it just isn’t the same.

FALLalalalalalalalaaaa
As summer
is coming to an end, fall is making its grand entrance. Rain is pouring down,
leaves are starting to turn all kinds of beautiful colors and with school
starting again we are all spending a lot more time indoors with a blanket
clasping a steaming cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. And I love it! So, I
decided to do a little fall series. I’ll talk about what I do, wear, put on my
face (read: make up),…
Now, get
yourself a blanket and a cup of whatever you want because we are discussing
indoor activities!

The Introduction
Oh no, oh no, oh no! Aaaah!
I finally
dared to sit myself down in front of a camera and filmed my first YouTube video
I actually talked in. It was awkward, it was strange, it was tong tying (excuse the dutchisms), but it
was also kind of fun. So, yes, I did it! and I have got nothing more to say
other than ‘Go watch it!’ and enjoy the cringe :p.

The Great Puzzle #6: A Little Goodbye to Antwerp
I was so
happy to be stepping on that train this morning. I was going to visit one of my
favorite cities and some of my favorite people. But the Antwerp I had left didn’t
seem to be there anymore. With my vision no
longer blurred by stress and anxiety, the place I arrived at had changed
drastically.
The streets
I rushed through countless times with my headphones in, music blaring, on my way
to a little studio I had started to call home suddenly called for all my
attention. All of a sudden there were shops I never cared to notice before and
statues of people long gone that never caught my eye. It almost felt like I was
on vacation trying to take in and remember as much of it as I possibly could
before having to leave it behind in this strange place in the past you can only
place by looking at
pictures or pointing it out on a map.
I’m on my
way home now, I guess. And as the train takes me away from the place I spend
the last two years of my life, I begin to realize just how much I am going to miss
this place and the people in it.

The Great Puzzle #5: Changes. Changes everywhere...
Pfoo… It’s
been a crazy busy week full of changes. Firstly, I moved
back home from my university room and from my room at home, I moved into my
sister’s old room. Which, for someone who doesn’t like change, is a lot on its
own. And to know that these pretty big changes are only a side effect of
an even bigger change is downright scary.

Zakynthos 2015!
Hey!
Somehow,
little me got to go on a second vacation! A few weeks ago I went to London with
my cousin and last week, my mom and I went to Greece! More specifically to the
Greek island Zakynthos. After a long month of exams and an amazing but tiring
trip to London, I needed to somehow be forced into relaxing for a week or so. And
I feel like Zakynthos did exactly that.

My Bucket List
There is a lot I want to do with my life. Some things are small, some things are big. Here they are:
Write a book
Writing a
book, I think, must be the most difficult and satisfying thing I could ever do.
Creating something out of nothing by knitting ideas together and making them
fit into a coherent story. To, then, crawl into someone’s head as they are
reading your book and taking them on an adventure through the words you have written.
And while being on that adventure, introducing them to your imaginary friends
and enemies in the hope that they might become just a little bit more real. There is nothing I would rather do.
Travel
I would
like to see as much of the world as I possibly could. I want to understand
different cultures. I want to visit the past by visiting the remains of it. I
want to drift away while looking at breathtakingly beautiful landscapes. I want
to let my imagination take me away, but never lose sight of what is right in
front of me.
Meet one of my heroes
I would
like to have coffee or cake or both with someone whom I look up to. Someone brilliant.
Just so we could talk for a while. I would like to see where their minds go
when they are not being asked questions.
Go to Disneyland
I need to
go there.
Work in a bookshop and a library
These places
and the people who work there make me happy. And I would love to be a part of
that for a little while.
Work as a volunteer in a third world country
I want to
see what life there is like, I want to understand it and I want to help.
Have a home library
I will have
a pinterest worthy home library. There will be books, shelves, a coffee/tea/hot
chocolate stand, socks, sofas, candles,… and quotes written all over the walls
and the ceilings in glow in the dark paint.
Backpack through at least 2 countries
Pack a bag,
a tent and a friend and go.
Graduate from an institution of higher
education
Working on
it…
Adopt a dog from a shelter
I love dogs
and to be able to save one by giving them a new home would be amazing.
Have an article published in a paper
This would
mean that I actually wrote something someone would want to read.
Make an entire outfit from scratch
My grandma
and my mother used to make their own clothes. And they made some really
beautiful stuff. So, I would like to learn how to do that too.
That is it
for now! This list will probably keep on growing. And hopefully, I will also be
able to tick some off.

The Great Puzzle #4: Park Conversations
Hey!
The weather
has been amazing these past few days. So, I decided to wear a dress and go read
for school in the park. You know, tanning those legs a little. Unfortunately,
with wearing dresses and shorts comes not only a tan, but also catcalling and
strangers telling you how to treat your body.
I had an awfully
boring class in the morning about the educational system of the US. And the only
thing getting me though it was the prospect of a nice afternoon in the park. So, when class was over, I fetched my blanket and books in my room
and headed to the park. On my way there, I started thinking “Wouldn’t a salad
be the cherry on top of this sunny day-cake?”. So, I got myself my favorite
salad and carried on with my little walk to the park, appreciating all the
people in their firstsunntdaysoftheyear moods. I arrived at the park, laid out
my blanket, sat down and started eating my salad when…
*Ugly statements coming up, reader discretion advised*
I heard
some guy behind me “Excuse me. Euhm… Hello?”. I turned around and saw that
there were two guys of Moroccan or Turkish ethnicity (I don’t really know... And no, I am not racist. And, yes it is relevant
to the story. Just keep reading and it will become clear in a minute.) sitting
behind me. “Euhm, hello.” They seemed very friendly until, “Why are you eating
a salad? That is not going to do you any good?”. So I asked, “How so?”. To which
they replied, “Well, wouldn’t it be better for you to eat meat or something of
the kind?”. “Why?” “you look like you could use some more strength” and whilst
saying this he gestured with his hands around his arms that they should gain
mass, or put on weight or whatever. I
was getting pretty annoyed at this point and my face reads like a book. So, as
put together as I could I said, “I decide for myself what I eat and how I treat
my body. So, I would like for you not to tell me what to eat or how my body
ought to look. It really isn’t necessary.” This is when they started to sense
that I was uncomfortable. Unfortunately, they concluded the following, “It
seems like you don’t like to talk with foreigners.” I was feeling so mad and
sad because that was just not true. So, I said, “No, that has nothing to do
with it. I just don’t appreciate it when people tell me what to eat or how to
take care of my body…”. And then, before I could even finish talking, “Ok, ok, I
was just saying that you could use some meat to strengthen up.” At this point I
was just mad, “I think I am strong enough up here *pointed to my head*, but thank
you anyway.” To which they said, “Alright, you don’t have to be so aggressive.
You are making me feel uncomfortable when you are looking like that. You know,
if eyes could kill I would be dead by now. We are just two guys trying to be friendly.
There is no point in being so offended.” Now, I was just confused. I turned
around, finished my delicious salad and started my book I had to read for
school. About fifteen minutes later they got up to leave and said “Goodbye,
nice meeting you.” One of them pointed to my book and said “Good luck with your
exams.” I told him thank you.
That occurrence
was yesterday now. I was so mad. To me they were just two sexist annoying guys
who thought they had the authority to tell other people how to treat their
body. Don’t get me wrong, they did. But, I don’t think it was intentional. I
have now come to realize that they actually were “just two guys trying to be friendly”.
Sadly, they didn’t know any better. It also didn’t help that for me, like a
great majority of the girls/women worldwide, it is difficult to be in those
sort of situations in which people are commenting on your weight and giving
their “advice”. Luckily, I feel good with the way my body looks. Otherwise, I wouldn’t
have been able to react in the way I did. But that doesn’t make it ok for other
people to suggest some changes I could make. It also doesn’t mean that it can’t
hurt and do some serious damage. I know I look good according to present day
beauty standards. I have the long legs, the tiny waste, the long hair and the
measurements of a model. Knowing that, I would be lying if I said that it doesn’t
boost my confidence. But, that doesn’t mean I always had the ability to put
things into perspective when it comes to my body. I was always the extremely
skinny girl who swam at least 2 hours a day, sometimes twice. And that raised
some suspicion. People would always tell me to eat more. Even if I already ate
three times the amount they had eaten. And I still hear people whispering
behind my back, recognizing the words “way too skinny” or even “anorexic”. Fortunately,
now I can put those things in perspective. I know that I eat somewhat healthy. I
do not shy away from a pizza. And, when I want to eat a salad, I WILL EAT THAT
SALAD! There is no point in trying to be anything that I am not. I will never
have the big boobs, nor the juicy butt. But, that’s fine. I am me and that
really, honestly should be and is enough.
P.s.: I
would like to, also, talk a little bit about the racist thing, when those guys
thought I didn’t want to talk to them because they were of a different
ethnicity. It saddens me that they would think that and so easily conclude that
I was racist. This, to me, was a sign that racisms still is a serious thing. And
I hope we, awesome people, can do something about it. I am not going to go
further into all of that though. Because, I simply do not know enough about the
matter. But, I also didn’t want to not go into it at all.
I hope you
are feeling ok. And if you find yourself in a similar situation, talk with that
person. Start the conversation. And then, keep the conversation going. I know
it is hard. I am SO proud of myself for reacting the way I did. Of course, I could
have handled things better. But, it is not easy to say in the moment what you
want to say or even just try to say what you want to say.
